Parkview Baptist School has partnered with Jump Start Your Heart, Inc. (JSYH) to provide FREE cardiovascular screenings for PBS athletes that transitioning from 8th to 9th grade or are new to the High School. JSYH is a non-profit organization that was established in 2008 by local cardiologist, Dr. Steven Kelley, to decrease the incidence of sudden cardiac deaths in student athletes.
The most common cause of death in young competitive athletes is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) or an enlarged heart. HCM is found in one out of every five hundred individuals. While the majority of those afflicted will remain symptom free, in periods of intense physical activity, HCM’s first manifestation can be cardiac arrest. Fortunately, HCM can be detected through these non-invasive cardiovascular screenings, which will include both an echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) and an electrocardiogram (EKG).
These consented cardiovascular screenings will happen in conjunction with athletic physical exams. Screenings will take place on Tuesday, May 29 beginning at 4:00 p.m. in the Elementary Building.
