Elementary Librarian
The PBS Elementary Library supports the entire curriculum through diverse lessons every week. We read aloud to the children and we coordinate a lesson extension on a wide variety of topics, including such things as engineering, architecture, and genealogy. We also reinforce ELA skills during our lessons. Additionally, we help develop spiritual connections with our reading selections so our students can develop a closer relationship to the Lord.

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computer program that helps teachers monitor children’s independent reading practice. The students select a book according to their own interests at their own level and read it at their own pace. When they finish the book, they take a short quiz on the computer. Each book is worth a certain amount of points based on the complexity of the text, and they earn up to 100% of the book’s point value according to their score on the quiz. This is an additional tool that teachers can use to measure the student’s comprehension as it promotes independent reading so that our precious children develop into lifelong readers and learners.

The Elementary Division encourages participation with Principal Shout-outs of individual recognitions and classroom recognitions, and mid-semester and semester achievement celebrations for students who attain their point goals set by their teacher. They can also achieve recognition for going above and beyond their goals.

The library also provides an opportunity every week for students to access quality reading material on a wide variety of subjects. We also provide incentives for students who achieve their goals and sponsor the four AR celebrations.

We are developing a Maker Space to foster the creativity of our students and allow opportunities for the children to express their ingenuity. We have special lessons designed to focus specifically on STEAM and Technology, including teaching about careers that use technology. For example, we taught the students about coding using the Library iPads and they can choose to practice their coding skills during library time. We recently had a lesson on graphic design using the iPads to draw.
