Middle School SOAR Students Enjoy ‘Sweet’ Business Project

Mrs. Fitz sixth grade SOAR students had fun working on a business economics problem. Students were divided into teams and formed their own cookie company. Each team of students found a cookie recipe that they thought would sell well and then “shopped” online for the recipe ingredients.  The next step was to figure out exactly how much of their grocery bill was going into the recipe itself.  For instance, they had to convert pounds of flour into cups using the density of flour, get the price per cup, and then multiply that amount by the recipe requirement for flour.  They did this with each ingredient and found the total cost to make the recipe.  Then they worked on marketing skills.  How many cookies should they sell as a unit?  What would the unit cost be based on the recipe cost?  How much should they charge per unit?  What would be their profit margin?  Should they have a marketing gimmick such as “buy two and get one free”?  How would that affect their profit?

Lots of math, lots of fun and lots of cookies!  A special thanks to the Middle School teachers who bought the cookies with their “specially printed project money”. The results of the competition were:
