Green Days and Green Space

Our AP environmental science students have been studying agriculture. They recently read a case study regarding the sustainable agriculture occurring at Kennesaw State University. At KSU, they grow all of the vegetables that are used in the cafeteria services on campus and then compost the kitchen food waste to use in the garden to grow the vegetables. Our students’ desire to develop something like this on campus lead to a discussion about “green space” and creating a garden of their own. With approval from Administration, our APES students dove in head first to construct their garden next to Building C. Students assessed the space to determine what improvements needed to be made, what they could successfully grow in that environment and what amendments needed to be made to the soil. Fridays have been deemed “garden days” as students unload trucks of soil, research plants, and create a garden design to submit for approval. Mrs. Meaux, High School Science Department Chair and teacher of APES, says she has been “overwhelmed by their dedication and enjoyment of the project.”
