It is so easy to get wrapped up in the things that make up a campus like buildings, air conditioners, and bumpy parking lots.  Paying attention to these things is very important for a safe and productive campus, but with the start of school this week, I have really been impressed with our people. 

Even though we have been spread pretty thin, I have never been more excited to start school and get our students back on campus.  Monday was awesome.  Carpool seemed to go fairly well considering we have about 50 families who were never able to go through any orientation, and with the addition of 230 new students.  Everything was calm and orderly and the students were smiling.  I can’t say enough how well our students are doing.  I have been to every part of the campus multiple times already and everywhere I visit I see great students who are getting along with each other.  In our administrative meeting yesterday, we were talking about how there seems to be a special spirit on campus this year. 

I have seen our parents pitching in and helping out in multiple ways.  It is so good to see familiar faces that I haven’t seen over the summer.  We truly have the best parents around.  I enjoyed seeing many of you Tuesday night at Middle School Open House.  You are so encouraging and supportive of the school and it really makes a difference.  I want to encourage each of you to not grow weary in doing good (Gal. 6:9).  We will have a lot of opportunities to reach out to each other in the coming months and I can’t wait to see how you respond to each other’s needs. 

I have been encouraged and inspired by our exceptional staff who, by their actions, have shown that they genuinely care about our students and community. Observing our new and seasoned staff serving in the community with our parents last week made me appreciate the caring community we live in.  I know what the Bible says about the human nature, but I have definitely seen the better side of it recently. 

I was recently speaking to a single mom with kids in our school who lost everything in the flood.  I saw the devastation of her house and my heart went out to the students she has in the school as I watched them look into their rooms which were now a total loss.  Not only did she lose her home, but she also told me that her job ended this week due to the flood as well.  I thought, that is another load on her shoulders on top of everything else.  You would think she would be giving up, but this parent was smiling and putting her life back together.  She said she will find work and move forward.  She is already getting ready to move into a new home and start over.  I tell this story as an example of the quality of individuals that make up our school. 

This is exactly the character we want to build in our students.  When you are down, get up.  When you see a need, do something about it.  Be positive and proactive.  I have seen all of these things in our people and it makes me proud to be an Eagle.
