Meet Mrs. Downing

Name:
– Mrs. Alisha Downing
Grades and Subjects Teaching:
– Parkview Flex 1st – 5th Grade Teacher
Year you began your teaching career:
– 2013
Degrees:
– B.S. Elementary Education with a minor in Spanish from William Carey University
Tell us about your family:
– I was born in Shreveport, LA, but lived in Baton Rouge and attended PBS from ages 2-14. Then my family and I moved to South America to be missionaries, first in Costa Rica, then in Peru. After high-school, I moved back to the States to attend college. I taught 1st grade for four years before getting married to my husband, Lance Downing. We have two amazing kids, Noraleigh (4) and Jon Henry (2). I’m excited that the Lord opened the door for me to teach at Parkview!
“I can knock down a wall with my bare hands! (Ask me about it!)”

Do you have an interesting fact?
– I love running and photography. I do not like reading but reading is my favorite thing to teach!
– On the mission field, I drank frog juice (never again), ate cow heart (delicious), and have eaten a (but not enjoyed) a guinea pig.
Why is Christian education important?
– I think there is a misconception that it’s difficult to find a connection between the fields of religion and science/math. In reality, teaching my students the scientific and mathematic explanations for things in the world helps them strengthen their faith. It’s important to see the beauty in the system that humans have come up with to explain what God has created for us.
