The first day of school is one of my favorite days. It started with our Senior class praying together at sunrise and quickly went into our daily routine from there. It is amazing to walk the campus and see how quickly things snap into order after the first bell. Our older students find their way pretty quickly, but that is not the case for everyone. While making my rounds, I came down the High School stairwell and paused as the Pre-K students were making their way out of their hallway. Coach Landry and Coach Bonaventure were patiently instructing the little ones on how to properly hold a door so others can safely pass through. The coaches were doing an awesome job with their interactive lesson as little eyes looked intently up at them. It struck me that these students needed basic instruction on things we take for granted. You could also tell that the students loved it and took it seriously. I have no doubt that they will move orderly and safely through doors until they graduate!
Several lessons struck me as I walked away. First, there is beauty in helping others. These students were not worried about the stock market or gas prices, they were simply engrossed in holding the door for others. Thinking of others takes your mind off a fallen world and feeds your spirit. Second, learning new things is fun. It speaks to our being. If you feel stress about the world, challenge yourself to learn something new. Our minds were created to grow. Lastly, Christ says He is the door to the Father in John 10:9. We enter into a right relationship with the Father through Christ. He is holding the door open for you to safely pass through. Let’s be sure and hold the door for others as well.
