Over the past two months, several middle-school band
students have had the opportunity to participate in various honor band
rehearsals and performances.
All-Parish Honor Band
participants performed in either the Concert Band or Symphonic Band on Jan. 23
at McKinley Middle School. The Concert
Band was conducted by various band directors from the area, and students
participating included Hayley Jordan, Charlene Guilliams, Sawyer Scott, Troy
Porter, Tre Nelson, Noah Whirley, Austin Lasseigne, and Colton Hollier. The Symphonic Band, the upper-level group,
was led by guest conductor Patricia Roussel, band director at East Ascension
High School. Students performing in this
group were Andrew Lewis, Chandler Strain, John Miller, Truman Loupe, and
Matthew Blanchard.
District Honor Band includes
students from the Ascension Parish and Baton Rouge areas and also includes a
group for both middle school and high school band students. Students selected traveled to Hammond in
January to rehearse on the campus of Southeastern Louisiana University. Bruce Pearson, nationally recognized composer
and arranger, led the middle school group, and Jim Byo, nationally known music
educator of LSU, conducted the high school honor band. Middle school students selected to participate
were Alex Rhodes, Andrew Lewis, Noah Whirley, and Charlene Guilliams. High school students playing in this honor
band included Mitchell Arceneaux, Angela Balis, Ryan Kinler, and Jacob Marzlof.
All Parish Jazz Honor
Band had a first time Parkview participant this year. Andrew Lewis auditioned on both piano and
trombone for this group. He was selected
for both instruments but was asked to play trombone as there was more of a need
for this instrument. Andrew performed under
the direction of J.R. Miller, a Louisiana native and band director on Feb. 17,
at Woodlawn High School.
